It’s Fall at the Sanctuary

All of us at the Sanctuary wanted to share with you the BEAUTIFUL VIEW we have from our catios. It is a wonderful time of year in the Catskills and all of us are enjoying laying in the sun and feeling the breezes.

We love October and Halloween will be here soon. We will be sending you pictures of our Halloween Party.

Happy Fall from all the Love and Hope kitties.

They Need Your Help!

The Love and Hope kitties live a wonderful, safe and secure life. But this is a expensive endeavor. The cost to support a cat here at the Sanctuary is over $1,000 a year. The kitties have asked Sonny to be their spokescat.

I was elected spokescat (well, not unanimously, don’t know what’s wrong with those who didn’t vote for me) because I am obviously beautiful, highly intelligent and articulate. They want me to give you some idea as to how much it costs to take care of us. I’m not going to bore you with every little detail, but here is a general idea.

Employee Payroll – $85,000 – There are 3 full time and 1 part time caretakers. They clean and disinfect our rooms everyday, 365 days a year, do our laundry, change our litter and feed us, not to mention hugging and kissing us as well.

Food – $40,000 – We like to eat both wet and dry.

Veterinarian – $22,000 – She takes VERY good care of us.

Medications and Medical Supplies – $18,000

Cleaning Supplies – $5,000 – We REALLY like our rooms to be kept clean.

This doesn’t even include things like repairs and maintenance, utilities, and insurance, as well as day to day expenses.

We receive no government funding and all of our support is from private donations. The officers and directors receive no compensation. Every penny raised goes solely to our care.

You can help us by making a donation by Clicking Here OR by “sponsoring a cat” with a monthly donation of your choice ($20-$75) by Clicking Here.

I have a sponsor, and I let her know how I am and when I can get some computer time, send her an email. Some of my friends do not have sponsors and would love a virtual adoption and person all of their own for Christmas. It would be the best present that they could receive.

Thank you for hearing my pitch and thank you for your help.

GOOD NEWS!!!

Many of you followed “Our Heroine” Portia’s journey since last year and know all about her difficult beginning and subsequent recovery from three leg surgeries that were the result of a terrible raccoon bite while she was giving birth. (You can read Portia’s past stories by clicking HERE; her stories can be found on the dates of 9/19/12, 1/26/13, 2/16/13, 2/25/13, 3/4/13 and 3/11/13.)

You cheered her on as she selflessly cared for her newborns despite a raging infection and the pain caused by multiple breaks to her leg.

You were with her through three leg surgeries performed in the hope of saving her leg.

You voted for her in Petfinder.com’s Luckiest Pet Contest and while she didn’t win that contest, she is certainly a winner in everyone’s heart.

Her third surgery was in January, and she recently had the six month follow up x-ray to determine what more, if anything, needed to be done. It was necessary to assess her leg’s current bone density so that the vet could decide whether or not some of the hardware needed to be removed from her leg. (I know it sounds strange, but if she was developing osteoporosis some of the hardware would have had to be removed to “destabilize” the leg and hopefully increase her bone density).

Her leg is GREAT! No osteoporosis or bone thinning. No more surgery necessary for this valiant girl!!! Yeah! Portia!

Welcome Facebook Friends

First, we would like to welcome the many of you who have joined our Facebook page since our last blog. We truly appreciate you interest in our Sanctuary and the work that we do. This is our first blog since I returned from India (a story that I hope to tell you in our next newsletter in a couple of weeks). Our blogs try to keep you informed as to the goings on at the Sanctuary and hopefully, you can share in our joy and sometimes our sorrow in caring for our wonderful creatures.
Ronnie Update!
Ronnie was first introduced to you in September 2011, having arrived at the Sanctuary on July 24th. As we told you, he was very ill at the time (as were his siblings) and all three required constant care. On January 13th we shared with you that Ronnie had had two cryogenic eye surgeries to freeze away all his upper eye lashes that were growing into his eyes and causing him difficulty. On March 13th he had a third surgery on his right eye to reconstruct his third eyelid. He is now recuperating and receiving a lot of TLC. In approximately three weeks he will have have the same surgery on his left eye. We hope that when these procedures are completed and Ronnie no longer has serious eye problems, this wonderful friendly boy will find a forever home. Because of your donations and continued support Ronnie has been able to have the surgeries that he needed. We can’t wait to send you a picture of him when he is fully recovered.

Back to India

My friend Suresh with a cat he rescued from the streets
I am again leaving for India in a few days, to work with my friend whose mission in life is to bring help and relief from suffering to the street animals of Mumbai. He and his small group of dedicated volunteers do so much for these animals with very little resources. As I will be gone for over a month, the only member of the Love and Hope family who can type will not be able to update you on Sanctuary activities. I will not return until March. However, I want to tell you a story while I am away and have scheduled a Newsletter to be published on February 1st. It is a story about my very special “Jewel of India” and I hope that you will enjoy her tale.
